The 2026 Summer Challenge is here, and it's time to Unearth a Story! Grab a friend or neighbor and register to read, play, and learn at the Library from June 1 through July 31. The Library's Summer Challenge is open to readers of all ages, from babies to adults.

What is Summer Challenge?

It’s our take on Summer Reading, an incentive program designed to inspire kids, teens, and adults to develop a lifelong love of learning and discover the joys of reading. We’ve expanded Summer Reading over the years to include more than reading books. To complete our Summer Challenge and earn prizes, you need to complete 20 of the following activities (in any combination):

• Reading (number of minutes is based on age group)
• Exploring a Storybook Walk 
• Visiting a Library Branch 
• Discovering a Library eResource
• Attending a Library Program
• Borrowing items from the Library
• Sharing the Library with Friends

Why Participate

Research shows that children can lose up to two months of reading progress over the summer break - a setback that adds up year after year. To help prevent this learning loss, the Summer Challenge helps build early literacy and independent reading skills while celebrating the joy of reading for pleasure. 

The Summer Challenge is open to readers of all ages - including adults!
